Japanese blue and white Arita dish, circa 1700, decorated in the Chinese kraak style, the centre with a bird perched on a rock and one in flight, with flowers and pomegranates, the rim divided into six panels alternating with peony and bamboo with cherry blossom, diameter: 14 7/16in. 36.6cm. Provenance: From the Collection of Timothy Lewis (1937-2004), Melplash Court, Dorset. Japanese dishes with similar decoration are known to have sometimes carried the V.O.C. monogram, as can be seen on the dish in the Princessehof Museum Collection, inv. no. 935.

Japanese Arita imari dish, 17th century, decorated with a jardinière on a table with a peony, with a vase on either side with dianthus and chrysanthemums, the border with two phoenixes and flowering branches, diameter: 12 5/8in. 32cm; condition: some rubbing to the enamels. A dish with this design is illustrated in Ayers, John, 'Chinese and Japanese Works of Art in the Collection of Her Majesty the Queen' Vol II, p.662, pl. 1556.

Pair of Japanese Imari figures of Bijin 'beauty', Edo period, late 17th/early 18th century, standing dressed in flowing robes decorated with floral designs and holding their sashes, height: 16 in., 41cm; condition: one figure with restoration to the base and neck. Such figures were mostly made for export to Europe, where they were not recognized as Japanese porcelain until a much later date. Japanese polychrome apothecary bottle, 18th century, in typical gallipot form, decorated with birds among branches of fruiting pomegranate and peony, with a band of lappets and scrolling foliage at the shoulder and with four peonies around the neck, height: 8 3/4in., 22.3cm; condition: restored break to body, rim remodelled. Gallipot's were produced in a number of sizes as Japanese export ware and were probably used as apothecary bottles or to store wine. The flanges around the neck allowed for a cloth covering to be fastened over the top. A similarly decorated gallipot is in the Ashmolean Museum Collection, Oxford; Accession no. EA1978.1793.

Japanese Arita blue and white ewer, c. 1700, with loop handle and waisted foot, decorated with figures in a fenced garden with rockwork in the Chinese transitional style, the neck with a band of scrolling foliage below stylized flowers, height: 8 3/8in., 21.5cm; condition: small chip to foot, minor glaze faults and faint stress lines. The shape of this ewer is probably based upon a German stoneware original. A similarly shaped vessel is illustrated in Jorg, Christiaan, 'Fine and Curious - Japanese Export Porcelain in Dutch Collections', p. 159, pl. 178.
