Large Swatow bowl, 17th century, decorated on the exterior with ducks and birds amongst flowers and foliage, the inside roundel with a scholars' table and flowers, the inner rim ; diameter:10 3/8in. 26.4cm. condition: neatly restored hair cracks and rim chips, crackle to glaze and some rubbing to decoration; These Swatow wares were made at in China at the Zhanghou Kilns, Fujian province. Ceramics of this type commonly known as Swatow(Gosu in Japanese) were imported into Japan for serving food at tea ceremonies (chanoyu).
