| Sold European Pottery Page 1 |  | This icon shows a Faenza Maiolica Albarello c. 1530; painted with label inscribed in blue with 'u.agrippa' against a background of scrolling foliage in green, blue , yellow and ochre, all between an upper band of dots and a lower one of crosses; height: 16.5 cm.; 6.1/2 in condition: Albarelli of this type are usually attributed to Faenza rather than Venice. Giacomotti, Catalogue des majoliques des musees nationaux cat no. 267 and museo d'Arti Applicante, Ceramiche, Vol 1 p.285 pl 311-12( Venice) 'u.agrippa is for unguentum Agrippae Regis, an ointment made from squill plant roots, wax etc. and named after herod Agripa 1, King of Judaea.
