Chinese famille rose 'Doctors' visit' plate, Qianl Ref: V88
Chinese famille rose 'Doctors' visit' plate, Qianlong (1736-95),circa 1738, after an engraving by Cornelis Pronk, decorated with three doctors sitting around a table on which there is a blue and white dish, in the back ground there is a peacock standing on trellis fence and a man standing underneath a tree with blossom and a parrot, the border with six cartouches containing pairs of fish against a white background with ducks and storks inbetween and a gilt trellis pattern above, with, diameter: 10 3/16in. 25.8cm. The scene was designed by Pronk in 1735, commissioned by The Dutch East India Company for their clients in Europe. The design would have been sent to Jingdezhen and then the finished products were sent back to the Netherlands, in 1738 and 1739. A second, later version of the design which contained only three figures was used after 1739. The original design was based on a traditional Chinese motif, which depicted the legend of woodcutter Wang Shi who came across three Daoist gods playing chess in a cave.
