Famille verte 'U' shape beaker Kangxi(1662-1722) painted in famille verte enamels depicts a famous East Asian allegorical tale known as The Vinegar Tasters (Sān suān tú). The "barrel" or vat in the rocky landscape contains vinegar, which symbols the "Essence of Life". The three men—two elegant scholars and their attendant (or more traditionally, three grand masters)—are the founders of China's three major philosophical and religious traditions: Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism
