Pair of magnificent Chinese famille rose hawks, QiPair of magnificent Chinese famille rose hawks, Qi Ref: TL332
Pair of magnificent Chinese famille rose hawks, Qianlong (1736-95), both finely modelled and enamelled as mirror-image poses and each having their head sharply turned in an alert posture. The colours are taken from nature with shades of brown and sepia for both the heads and bodies and yellow detailed in brown, for the shanks and claws. The eyes with a circle of turquoise enamel surrounding the black pupil. The realistic enamelling of the feathers rendered in sepia with pencilled markings in contrasting deeper tones. The folded wings and tail have gilded quills. Each bird stands on rockwork with one claw drawn up to its body. The rockwork of both is enamelled in colours which run together - washes in green, brown and splashes of pink. The rocks are hollow at the base and pierced in the sides to represent openings. The mouths are also open for the escape of air during firing.
Pairs of Chinese models of hawks appear frequently in sales records of the mid-18th century and appear to have been made in several sizes. It is considered that this pair depict sparrowhawks, described in French auction reports as eperiers and probably known to the Chinese as haidongqing, a small hawk used by the Chinese for goose hunting. An almost identical pair of hawks from the Franks Collection are illustrated in the exhibition catalogue, 'Ancient Chinese Trade Ceramics from the British Museum'. Height: 28 cm height: 11in., 28.5cm, condition: restored, Provenance: From a German Noble family
