A Chinese five-piece famille rose 'Batavian' garniture set, Qianlong (1736-95), consisting of three covered baluster vases and two trumpet-shaped vases, decorated with leaf-shaped cartouches containing branches of flowering peony, reserved against a cafe-au-lait ground, height of baluster vase and cover: 28cm; height of trumpet vase: 23cm., condition: restoration to one baluster vase and one beaker vase and all the lids. 'Batavian' ware is a type of Chinese export porcelain which uses a surface covering brown-glaze and takes its name from the city of Jakarta which was a trading centre for the Dutch East India Company.

Chinese famille rose jug and cover, Qianlong (1736-95) decorated with 'long Elizas' on a terrace and by a pavilion overlooking a river with flowering lotus, height: 7in., 18cm; condition: neatly sealed hairline to rim and small area to spout filled, minute chip to cover restored. For an illustrated example of a similar jug and cover see 'Chine de Commande' from the Royal Museum of Arts and History, Brussels p.74, pl. 75. The shape of this jug is derived from a European silver or faience model. The European influence on the jug can also be seen in the garland of flowers around the rim of the jug and cover.

Chinese famille rose melon tureen and cover, Qianlong (1736-95), in the form of a melon, with applied vine stems and leaves, decorated with scattered sprigs and sprays of flowers, the finial in the form of a grape or cherry, height: 4 1/8in., 10cm; length: 4 1/4in., 11cm; condition: restoration to tendrils, chip to stalk, frit to base and fritting to rim of cover. Many examples of 18th century melon tureens were made in English pottery and creamware and are thought to have been based upon Meissen and silverware prototypes. Such items may have been intended as dessert-course novelty items.

Chinese famille rose hunting bowl, Qianlong (1736-95), decorated with European style figures hunting with dogs, diameter: 26cm, 11 1/4 inches 28.3cm. condition: two small chips and two faint 'hair-lines' to rim. Chinese porcelain with sporting subjects were particularly popular in the latter half of the 18th century in England and America. Painters in Canton used Western prints as a model for the hunting scenes porcelain. Bowls such as this were probably used to serve punch after a day of hunting.

Chinese famille rose figure, c. 1750-1770, Qianlong (1736-95), of a male figure in blue robes with dragon medallions seated on a rockwork base, height: 7 1/2in., 19cm; condition: restored. This figure was originally part of a rare 'Teeth-Cleaning' figure group, in which the man would have been accompanied by a young lady seated on his knee as she attended to his teeth. Part of a series of 'erotic' figure groups of everyday activities, a 'teeth-cleaning' group from the Dr. Anton C.R. Dreesmann Collection was sold at Christie's, London, 10 April 2002.

Chinese famille rose 'ear-cleaning' figure group, Qianlong (1736-95), of a lady with one knee raised revealing a bound foot examining the ear of a man seated on a rockwork base, height: 7 3/4in., 19.7cm; condition: restored. This figure group belongs to a series of 'erotic' figures which depict men carrying out intimate everyday activities with younger women, such as ear-cleaning and wine drinking, which W.H. Sargent suggests are preliminary to sexual advances. A wine drinking group from his series is illustrated in David S. Howard, 'The Choice of the Private Trader', p. 257, pl. 306. A rare group of 'erotic' figures from the Dr Anton C.R. Dreesmann Collection was sold at Christie's in 2002.

Chinese famille rose equestrian figure of Wang Zhaojun, Qianlong (1736-95), the lady playing a stringed instrument whilst riding side-saddle upon a piebald horse, all upon a rectangular base, height: 8 1.4in., 21cm; condition: break and small chips restored to a high standard. Provenance: from the collection of Lady Ottoline and Philip Morrell, and thence by descent. Lady Ottoline Violet Anne Morrell (16 June 1873 – 21 April 1938) was an English aristocrat and society hostess. Wang Zhaojun was one of the four beauties of ancient China. The story goes that Wang Zhaojun left her hometown to enter the harem of Emperor Yuan. Feeling sad during her journey whilst travelling on horseback she began to play sorrowful tunes on a stringed instrument. A flock of geese flying above heard the music and seeing the beautiful young woman riding the horse forgot to flap their wings and fell to the ground. From then on, Zhaojun acquired the nickname "fells geese".

Large rare Chinese famille rose baluster jug, Qianlong (1736-95), the ribbed body decorated with a mountainous landscape with pagodas and walled garden, height: 34.5cm; condition: handle broken and neatly restored. The proto type for this jug is Meissen from a few years earlier, for a similar example see Beurdeley, 'Porcelain de la Compagnie des Indes', (1962) p. 117, pl. XX1. Most examples of this extremely rare jug are decorated with floral designs; what may make this jug unique is its decoration.

Chinese Canton famille-rose oval dish, 19th century, the interior is decorated with a seated dignitary accompanied by attendants in a courtyard setting, in the centre two kneeling women seek supplication from a court attendant while two standing women carrying baskets look on, the exterior border with butterflies and floral sprays, width: 15 1/4in. (38.5cm), height: 13in. (33cm); condition: some wear to enamels and gilding, two tiny frits. Butterflies (hudie ??) symbolise blessings or happiness and when accompanied by peonies mean 'may you have an accumulation of blessings, wealth and high social status' and among blooming flowers is an auspicious design symbolising joy, love and good fortune.
