Italian Castel Durante Crespina c1560, painted by Georgio Picci with Susannah and the Elders, the reverse inscribed f hnechi f Susanna, diameter: 24.5cm A group of Castel Durante wares have been identified as the work of this artist. The composition of this dish is typical of his style and also the three crosses in the foreground are seen as being a hall-mark of his work. Due to recent research it is now thought that Andreas Da Negroponte commissioned work by Georgio Picci and is not as originally thought the artist.

The Grue were a family of Italian potters, originally from Castelli and active between the 16th-18th centuries.

Italian Urbino Istoriato dish, circa 1540, possibly from the Durantino workshop, depicting Marcus Curtius in a golden breast plate with a plumed helmet on horseback, riding across a dark chasm flanked by attendants, inscribed with 'Marco Curzio' to the reverse, diameter: 11in., 27.9cm, condition: damaged. (Marcus Curtius is a legendary Roman character who bravely sacrificed himself to the god of Hades in order to prevent a deep pit from swallowing Rome.) Provenance: From a private collection in Dorset, acquired by the family as a gift from the doctor and historian Sir Ernest Kaye le Fleming.

Italian Faenza maiolica armorial albarello, circa 1550, the upper body decorated with a bust-length portrait of a bearded man in profile, within a yellow-ground medallion inscribed •TURPIN•, with an acanthus border, the waist inscribed ‘syo.agrimonia’ in blue gothic script (agrimonia eupataria: a drug prepared with the herb agrimony and thought to relieve sore throats and liver problems), the reverse decorated with a circular medallion enclosing a hound on a hill beneath three stars, the lower part with a band of flower-head medallions, within yellow band borders, height: 11 in., 28 cm; condition: short hairline crack to neck and chips to upper rim. The portrait may be of the late 8th century ecclesiastic Turpin, Archbishop of Reims. At the request of Charlemagne, Pope Adrian sent Turpin the pallium, thus bestowing him with the rights of the Church. Italian Maiolica jar, Venice, circa 1565, probably workshop of Domenego da Venezia, the ovoid body with a cylindrical tapering neck and flat unglazed base, painted in blue, green, yellow, orange, brown, purple, black and white, an oval panel enriched with scrolls and painted with a Franciscan with a halo and holding a book in one hand and an image of the head of the sun in the other with characteristic white halo delineated by radiating orange streaks on a yellow ground, the panel on a dark blue ground incised with curved strokes and enriched with foliage and flower heads; diameter: 10 3/16in., 26.5cm; height: 13 1/8in., 33.4cm. Italian Deruta maiolica rectangular plaque, 17th century, depicting the Madonna and Child, the Virgin with a veil, clothed in a long-sleeved tunic with a mantle over her shoulders, the Christ child seated on her lap, one hand tugging the Virgin's veil, the other touching the fingers of the Virgin's left hand, with two putti above and a further putto within the Virgin's sleeve, height: 16 in., 40.6 cm; width: 12¼ in., 31.7 cm; Based on a relief by Benedetto da Maiano (1442–1497 Florence). A marble relief by Maiano with similar decoration can be found in the MET Museum, Accession no. 41.190.137. It is suggested that 'Benedetto’s conceit of the Child toying with the veil and the play of expressive hands may have been borrowed from Leonardo da Vinci’s Madonna with the Carnation' (Wardropper, 2011). Some versions of the relief include angels, some do not, and some depict the Child holding an apple or orb rather than the veil.

Italian maiolica wet drug jar, Montelupo 17th century, with strap-handle and knot-tied spout, decorated with a scroll label with the inscription 'Syo de Stidos Costo' against scrolling acanthus leaf ground, height: 9 15/16in., 25.3cm; condition: chip to end of spout, chip to foot rim, fritting to edges. The inscription may refer to a syrup decoction of ?stecados (French Lavender) and/or the root of costus Arabicus, a plant native in the East and formerly known as Aucklandia costus.
