Japanese 'Moon Viewing' boy with puppy, Edo Period, circa 1690, holding a vase in his right hand with his face upturned and smiling with a puppy at his feet, his robes decorated in verte imari, with black enamel to the hair and the spots on the puppy, height: 12 3/4in. 32.5cm. Moon viewing (tsukimi) was a Japanese custom where people would gather with specially made rice cakes to look at the mid-autumn moon (chushu no meigetsu), the full moon in the middle of the ninth lunar month as said to be absolutely spherical and very beautiful. Magnificent Japanese kakiemon vase, Edo period (1670-1690), of oviform with short ring neck, decorated in iron red, green, yellow aubergine, blue and black enamels and underglaze blue circumferential lines to the foot and shoulder, with three panels divided by scrolling foliage and peonies, depicting figures standing among rocks, bamboo and chrysanthemums with one figure under a parasol, the other with a fan looking up at a bird on a stem of bamboo, height: 30.5cm. 11 13/16in. condition: neatly consolidated. In a painting on the ceiling by Augstin Terwesten there is a vase of this shape and pattern, the ceiling was completed in 1695, SOLD
