Chinese russet-glazed bowl, Northern Song (1127-1279) possibly Yaozhou ware, the widely flared conical body, with a rich variegated russet glaze thinning in areas and falling irregularly onto a slightly flared ring foot, the unglazed base showing a fine-grained, pale grey body. Chinese blue and white klapmutz bowl, Wanli (1573-1619), decorated in the centre with a basket of flowers, the cavetto with alternating panels containing auspicious symbols and sprays of flowers, the rim with sprays of peaches, diameter: 8 1/2in., 21.5cm; condition: shallow chip to underside of rim, frits to rim, firing crack and some sand to base. Klapmuts porcelain get their name from the Dutch klapmutsen hats whose shape they resemble with their rounded walls and flattened rim.

Korean celadon stoneware oil bottle, Koryo dynasty (12th-13th century) of flattened, circular form with short neck, the shoulder decorated with an inlaid white slip of chrysanthemum flower heads, height: 1 7/8in., 4.9cm; condition: minute frits to rim. Provenance: Sold by John Sparks Ltd. London 1975. A similarly decorated oil jar is illustrated in 'The World's Great Collections: Oriental Ceramics Vol. 9, The Freer Gallery of Art, Washington D.C.'
