Chinese jade pig, late Qing, the body carved into a recumbent animal with its head resting on its front hooves and hind legs tucked under its body, the tail curling around the left haunch, length: 2 in. (5 cm.). The pig is a symbol of abundance and prosperity; it is the last animal in the Chinese zodiac and represents hai, the last of the twelve earthly branches. Along with the sheep, cow, chicken and dog, the pig is one of the original five domesticated animals of the Chinese.

Chinese boxwood ruyi sceptre, 19th/20th century, the body formed into a gnarled branch encircled by tendrils of vines and smaller fungi, terminating in a flat head of lingzhi fungus shape, length: 16 ½ in. (41.5 cm.) Ruyi sceptres were a part of the scholar’s paraphernalia; scenes of scholar’s holding such sceptres were usually taken as a sign of authority, so a sceptre would most likely have been given as a mark of respect. In scenes depicting the scholar’s study the sceptre was often put in a brush pot or placed on a table.

2 Mother-of-Pearl armorial gaming counters, Qing period, circa 1830, delicately carved in low relief with figures and pagodas in a landscape, the inverse with birds in a floral border surmounting a central roudel containing a horse’s head erased above the initials ‘S H’ for Simon Horsley; diameter: 2 5/16 in. x 3/4 in. (6cm. X 2.3cm.). For a useful essay on mother-of-pearl armorial gaming counters see Howard, D. S., ‘Chinese Armorial Porcelain’, Vol. II, Howard notes that ‘a characteristic of early 19th Century counters is their elaborate and intricated engraving or carving, compared with the simpler designs of a century earlier some sets were not engraved but actually carved in low relief’. (p. 32-33) It is extremely likely that those families who ordered armorial porcelain also ordered mother-of-pearl counters and, as with these examples, the armorial was often simplified to a crest and initials.

Chinese Yixing 'landscape and scholar's objects' teapot, Kangxi (1662-1722), of ovoid form, with moulded decoration of scholar’s objects and scenes including two figures crossing a bridge over a sampan, a pavilion and walled garden with rockwork, the cover decorated with a beribboned scroll and flowers, the handle decorated with florets and the long spout with scrollwork, surmounted by a spherical knop with three ruyi heads, height: 6in. (15.2cm.), condition: the cover with a small restored rim chip and a restored hairline extending from the knop to the rim, and possibly a restored nick to the lip, the teapot with some minor nicks and a short hairline at the mouth rim. Overall with some firing imperfections including firing tears to both the teapot and the cover, and a circular firing line at the bottom of the lower terminal of the handle.
