Pair of Chinese octagonal armorial soup plates, c. 1770, Qianlong (1736-95), decorated in the centre with the arms of Crawfurd of Baidland with the coat of Payne of East Grinstead, Sussex, in pretence (gules a fess ermine between three mullets argent (here or) two crescents interlaced of the field; the crest a falcon hooded and belled proper, with the coat of Payne, party per fess sable argent two lions passant counterchanged), enclosed by a flower festoon, the rim with a garland of flowers, diameter:8 7/8in., 22.5cm; condition: good. This service was made for Gibbs Crawfurd (b.1732) MP for Queenborough and Clerk to the Ordnance. In 1760 Crawfurd married Annan Payne. A platter from this service is illustrated in David Sanctuary Howard, 'Chinese Armorial Porcelain' Vol. I, p. 627, pl. S6. SOLD
