Talavera or Puente tin glazed dish circa 1580-1650 Ref: X490
Talavera or Puente tin glazed dish circa 1580-1650, decorated in blue, iron-red and manganese with a cartouche containing the sacred initials IHS with mantling and scrolls surmounted with a crown; the border with semi-circles and florets. IHS stands for IEUSUS HOMINUM SALVATOR - Jesus Savior of Man or possibly it's a Latinization of the Greek IHC (Iota Eta Sigma), being the first three letters--or first two and last--of the Greek form of Jesus: IHCOYC. The border band is reminiscent of Flemish lace and the mantling could have been inspired by Flemish strapwork. diameter: 13 1/4in., 34cm; condition: restored. (23.5 cm.); condition: chips to rim, drilled suspension hole to rim.
