English early delftware pottery blue dash dish of the Temptation of Adam and Eve, circa 1700, possibly Bristol England
Delftware tin glaze dish painted in polychrome colours withf the Temptation of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. The dish is decorated with a blue dash border and has three stilt marks on the front.
Dimensions:
34.5 cm diameter;
Condition:
staple repair and some firing blemishes to the front
Notes:
The posture of the figures and the painting style compare closely with a dish in the Victoria and Albert Museum inscribed “B/S E 1741” (Michael Archer, Delftware, A18, p. 84; see also A19–A20). The figural stance departs from the seventeenth‑century tradition based on Crispin van de Passe’s engraving The Temptation, indicating a later development in style.
