Chinese famille verte dish, Kangxi (1662-1722), decorated in the centre with a scene from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, the rim with cartouches containing beribboned precious objects against a hatch cellular border; Diameter: 14 in. (35.5 cm.) This dish probably narrates the moment Zhao Yun, depicted here on horseback and in armour, accompanied by two soldiers and a bannerman, arrives from the Battle of Changban to rescue Liu Bei’s son Liu Shan and his mother Lady Gan. Liu Bei had abandoned his family against the onslaught of Cao Cao’s forces; but when Zhao Yun had successfully rescued them he was promoted by Liu Bei to the rank of General Standard. SOLD
