Rare Japanese imari lacquered vase, circa 1700, the octagonal body decorated in black lacquer with applied decoration of birds and insects in a fenced garden with flowering branches of chrysanthemum and prunus issuing from rockwork, the shoulders with shishi interspersed by peony flowerheads against scrollwork with butterflies, the tall neck with alternating gold and blue decorative stripes against a red ground.
