A Chinese enamel teapot and cover with looped fixed handle, Qianlong (1736-95), the lobed body painted in enamels in the famille rose palette with large lobed cartouches containing birds and insects perching on various flowers, set against a ground of alternating floral cell pattern, the gently curving spout with blue foliate scroll, the neck with a blue leiwen band, the top with further floral cartouches set against a yellow basket-pattern ground, the handle with yellow oyster-shell and blue basket patterns and three small floral cartouches; the base with 'shou' symbol within a blue roundel.

Condition:
Historically restorers sprayed extensively covering an area much larger than the damage; making judging damage difficult. Nearly all early Canton has faults

This piece was loaned by the vendors to be included in an exhibition of Chinese Painted Enamel at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford in 1978, curated by Michael Gillingham.
