Two rare large famille verte dishes, late Kangxi (1662-1722)/Yongzheng (1723-35), the decoration in the centre includes rock, pine and bamboo, emblematic of the 'Three Friends of Winter' and a deer, lingzhi (mushrooms), a crane in flight and prunus. The border with scrolling leaves and flower heads highlighted in gilt, the inner border with ruyi heads in underglaze red and the reverse with 2 sprays of flowers in underglaze red.
Notes:
Pine:
Known as an evergreen, the pine tree represents longevity and endurance
because it retains its green needles even through harsh winters.
Bamboo, with its flexibility and ability to bend but not break, symbolizes strength, resilience, and adaptability.
Plum (as part of the "Three Friends of Winter"):
The plum tree, along with pine and bamboo, is part of the "Three Friends of Winter" motif, which represents longevity, constancy, and flowering during winter.
Rocks, like pines, are also seen as symbols of solidity and endurance.
The "Three Friends of Winter":
Together, the pine, bamboo, and plum (and sometimes a stone) represent the ability to endure hardship and maintain virtue, even in the face of adversity.
