Italian maiolica wet drug jar, Montelupo 17th century, with strap-handle and knot-tied spout, decorated with a scroll label with the inscription 'Syo de Stidos Costo' against scrolling acanthus leaf ground, height: 9 15/16in., 25.3cm; condition: chip to end of spout, chip to foot rim, fritting to edges. The inscription may refer to a syrup decoction of ?stecados (French Lavender) and/or the root of costus Arabicus, a plant native in the East and formerly known as Aucklandia costus. A similar jar can be seen in the Musée de la Chartreuse Collection, inventory no. A.3053.
